National Surveillance Protocols (NSPs) serve as the first point of reference for developing surveillance plans, and include information on surveillance methodology, pest/pathogen biology, taxonomy, identification and sample processing.

The Annual Surveillance Workshop 2017 was held at the EcoSciences Precinct in Brisbane on the 24-25 May 2017. The theme was establishing a National Plant Biosecurity Surveillance Network and scoping a network website.

Plant health surveillance data protocols describe the required fields and controlled vocabulary to produce a valid pest record for a pest or pest group using the Pest Record Specification. Data protocols are subordinate documents to the National Surveillance Protocols (NSP) and may also be created for pests that are not subject to an NSP.

This project seeks to further develop a decision-support framework that would significantly improve risk management decisions and resource allocation throughout the biosecurity system (from pre-border to pest management) by applying a systematic risk / return approach and evidence based analysis. The project will focus on extending current work on a high-level framework and example case studies e.g. fruit flies and brown marmorated stinkbug, to provide a much more comprehensive tool to populate with data across all major pathways.
