Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an invasive pest of numerous agricultural crops with an increasing global distribution. Finding simple and reliable monitoring tools for H. halys agricultural and surveillance programs is imperative. In 2016, we compared standard pyramid traps to clear sticky cards attached atop wooden stakes and evaluated two commercially formulated lures (Trécé and AgBio) with low and high rates of the H. halys aggregation pheromone (PHER) and pheromone synergist (MDT) at 12 sites). In 2017, we reevaluated lure efficacy using only the clear sticky traps at six locations.

Protocols & Plans
The early detection of invasive plants that occur at low abundance and with limited distribution provides the best opportunity to prevent the environmental and agricultural consequences associated with wide-scale establishment. It also represents the stage of invasion at which a rapid response results in cost effective management. For these reasons, the national biosecurity system, and that of each state and territory in Australia, places significant emphasis on the importance of surveillance activities, which are essential for early detection.

Strategies
Effective surveillance and diagnostic services are pivotal to the successful operation of the national biosecurity system. However, much of the surveillance and diagnostic activity currently undertaken by governments is fragmented. Decision making on where and when resources are allocated is being applied differently across activities and across jurisdictions.
