Sea containers are essential to global trade; however, they can also facilitate the international spread of plant pests, posing significant risks to agriculture, the environment, biodiversity, food security, and international trade.
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has developed a series of five capacity-building videos to support global stakeholders to minimise pest contamination associated with the movement of sea containers. The videos provide practical guidance for government and industry stakeholders on understanding and applying good pest risk management practices throughout the supply chain.
The guidance has been developed with input from key international sea container industry organisations and associations, including the Bureau International des Containers, the Global Shippers Forum, the World Shipping Council, members of the IPPC Sea Container Focus Group, the Pacific Community (SPC), and members of the Pacific Plant Protection Organization (PPPO).
The videos are intended as a global capacity‑building resource and are not designed to replace individual countries’ regulatory requirements, policies, procedures, or practices, including those of the department.
Stakeholders are encouraged to view the videos, apply the guidance where relevant, and share them within their organisations and international networks to support global efforts to minimise pest contamination.
